Bulyea was first settled in 1882 and 1883 by immigrants from the United Kingdom and Ireland. People of Norwegian and German origins came later and joined them. The community grew enough to incorporate as a village on March 9, 1909.
The village takes its name from George H. V. Bulyea, a former member of the North-West Legislative Assembly who went on to become the first Lieutenant Governor of Alberta.
Hockey has long been part of local life. A Bulyea senior men's team was one of five founding members of the Highway Hockey League in central Saskatchewan in 1965.
